Breakfast again across the street at Serra Pastisseries. This morning I get scrambled eggs with ham and Richard goes for a big breakfast sandwich of ham and cheese. Cost €10.00.
Today will be another Gaudi day. We will concentrate on La Pedrera/Casa Mila and the "Block of Discord" featuring a visit to Casa Batllo. First stop is La Pedrera. Corner of Passeig de Gracia and Provenca. UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site. Senior ticket cost $38.50 for the both of us which includes audioguide and entry to the roof. Built between 1906 and 1912. True Modernisme. Built for Pere Mila i Camps as a family residence and also apartments to rent. La Pedrera translates to the quarry-called that because of its jagged, rocky facade. This is a building that embodies nature. A huge wave set in stone. Original furnishings inside. Interior courtyards. The roof terrace where there are 30 chimneys and ventilation towers. The attic has an exhibition of Gaudi's life and works. The attic has distinctive parabola-shaped arches. Gaudi did them this way to support the roof above. Laundry was done up here. The Pedrera apartment is on the 4th floor. I found this to be very enjoyable and I'm learning to see that Gaudi was a visionary of total art. You can see lots of elements of nature here. At the end of the visit you can get your picture taken. I do it by myself as Richard is not in the mood. Cost €10. I get 2 nice pictures and when I get home I can go online, put in my photo number, and download this picture. We have spent 2 hours here.
Now we're going to continue to walk down Passeig de Gracia. This is a main boulevard in the Eixample district that runs from Placa de Catalunya to the Gaudi sights. We pass by shops-Prada, Cartier, Louis Vuitton. Very up market/ritzy. Soon we arrive at our next stop.
Casa Batllo. 43 Passeig de Gracia. "Block of Discord" due to the 3 colorful Modernista facades that compete for attention. Designed by Gaudi. Senior rate cost which includes the audio/video guide $50.16 for the 2 of us. Highlight is the roof. Interesting interior. We see a mushroom shaped fireplace nook on the main floor. Blue and white ceramic atrium. Attic with parabolic arches. Hardly any straight lines. The video guide at times will show how the rooms were furnished. At the end we can go outside to stand on a balcony and get our picture taken. I talk Richard into doing this. What a nice picture. Cost $14.00. I can also download this when I get home. We spend 1 hour 45 minutes here.
Right next door is Casa Museu Amatller. 41 Passeig de Gracia. Designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch in the late 19th c for the Amatller chocolate making family. Neo-Catalan Gothic facade. Opened to the public in 2015. Mostly original furniture. We do not tour the inside of this building.
Casa Lleo Morera. 35 Passeig de Gracia. Designed by Lluis Domenech i Montaner. 1906. Not open to visitors. Mulberry references-family name means mulbery in Spanish. We continue walking until we reach Placa de Catalunya where we get a taxi back to our hotel. Back at our hotel when I go to change from my sunglasses to my regular glasses I see that the case isn't in my purse. Could I have left it at Casa Batllo or the taxi?? I send an e-mail to Casa Batllo. Luckily I packed an extra pair of regular glasses. We spend an hour or so at the pool.
Dinner-Crudo Bar. Drinks-red wine, beer. Grilled corvina fish with romesco sauce for me, corvina fish ceviche with yellow hot pepper for Richard, and a mixed salad to share. Nice place with good food and good service. Cost without tip $58.33. Walking we spot a gelateria so we stop for gelato/ice cream. Richard gets yogurt-cherries and black berries in a cone. I get a small dish of the avellana gelato which I think is hazelnut. Whatever, perfect ending to a great Gaudi day. Tomorrow will be our last full day in Barcelona. We still have so much we didn't see/do yet but we have had an amazing time so far.
